Jiangxi Introduction

Jiangxi province is situated in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Its neighboring provinces include Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Hunan, Hubei and Anhui. Jiangxi province got its name during the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907) and because the Gan River runs through this province from north to south, it is also called Gan for short. It covers an area of 1,669,000 square kilometers (644,440 square miles) with a population of about 40 million.
The historical sites of Jiangxi also attract guests from all corners of the world. Nanchang is the capital of Jiangxi. Tengwang Pavilion is located just west of Nanchang and is o­ne of three famous pavilions south of the Yangtze River. This pavilion gained its reputation to a great extent because of a well-known poem called 'Preface to Tengwang Pavilion' by Wangbo, a reputable poet of the Tang Dynasty. Donglin Monastery is located at the foot of Lushan. It was built in 386 for the monk Hui Yuan (334-416), founder of the Pure Land sect of Buddhism. Hui Yuan spent many years translating Buddhist scriptures in this temple
The highlight of Jiangxi travel should be Jingdezhen, which is known as the 'Capital of Porcelain' in China. Ceramics were produced here as early as 1,800 years ago in the Eastern Han Dynasty. Today, Jingdezhen remains a national center for porcelain production. While in this ancient town, tourists can visit many pottery factories and ancient kiln sites. In addition, Jiangxi is o­ne of the ancient tea-producing areas in China. The Black Tea produced in Ningzhou City and the Green Tea produced in Wuyuan City are well-known throughout China.

By Air: Changbei Airport in Nanchang is a modern international air hub located north of the city. Flights to 29 major cities in China, including Hongkong, are available weekly, some daily. In addition, Jiangxi has other civilian airports in:
Ganzhou with flights to Guangzhou (1hour), Nanchang (1.5hours), Shanghai Pudong (4.5hours) and Xiamen (1.5hours) available.
Jingdezhen with flight to Beijing (2.5hours), Guangzhou (1.5hours) and Shanghai Pudong (1hour).
Charted flights to Jiujiang and Ji'an are also available.

By Train: Jiangxi has an advanced railroad network. Nanchang is the o­nly provincial capital o­n the Beijing-Kowloon line. Other major lines include the Hangzhou-Nanchang line, the Nanjing-Nanchang line, the Yingtan-Xiamen line and the Wuhan-Jiujiang line.
There are trains available from Nanchang to Guangzhou (15hours), Shanghai (12hours), as well as several cities in Jiangxi, including Jiujiang (1.5hours) and Ji'an (4hours).

By bus: The superhighway infrastructure in Jiangxi is well developed. The Jiujiang-Nanchang (less than 2 hours) Grade o­ne National superhighway and Jiujiang-Jingdezhen (less than 2hours) superhighway have been completed. There are also six National highways linking Jiangxi with Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, Anhui, Hunan, Hubei.

By Boat: Jiangxi is known locally as the "water country", a result of the four river branch network, the river's Gan and Xin longitudinally, and the Yangzi and the Chang flowing latitudinally. These rivers, along with the large Poyang Lake (Poyang hu), are still used as useful modes of transporting goods and people. Jiujiang remains a major freshwater port city, and ferries from a number of cities and towns in the province can still take you o­n the Yangtze as far as Wuhan (12hrs), Nanjing (24hrs) and even Shanghai (around 50hrs).

Jiangxi Festivals

Zhongyuan  festival: The Double Seventh Festival, o­n the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, is a traditional festival full of romance. It often goes into August in the Gregorian calendar.

This festival is in mid-summer when the weather is warm and the grass and trees reveal their luxurious greens. At night when the sky is dotted with stars, and people can see the Milky Way spanning from the north to the south. o­n each bank of it is a bright star, which see each other from afar. They are the Cowherd and Weaver Maid, and about them there is a beautiful love story passed down from generation to generation.
