Dalian Introduction

On the east coast of Eurasia and the southern tip of Liaodong peninsular in northeast China, Dalian stretches from 120°58' to 123°31' east longitude and 38°43' to 40°10' north latitude, with the Yellow Sea o­n the east, Bohai Sea o­n the west, facing the Shandong peninsular across the sea o­n the south and backed up by the vast Northeast Plain o­n the north. Dalian is the marine gateway of northeast China. It is also an important port, and a trade, industry and tourism city.
Dalian covers an area of 12574 square kilometers, among which 2415 square kilometers of area is the old city. This area abounds with mountains and hills, while plains and lowlands are rarely seen. The terrain, high and broad o­n the north, low and narrow o­n the south, tilts to the Yellow Sea o­n the southeast and the Bohai Sea o­n the northwest from the center. The region which faces the Yellow Sea is long and gentle. The Qianshan Mountain range of Chang Baishan Mountain system passes through the whole region from north to south. Mountain regions and long eroded foothills are widely dispersed within the region. Plains and lowlands are o­nly interspersed near the confluence and in some valleys. Kast topography and sea erosion topography are everywhere.

Dalian lies in the warm temperate zone of the North Hemisphere, with maritime feature of warm temperate continental monsoon climate. Thus, its four seasons are distinct with neither extremely cold weather in winter nor extremely hot weather in summer. The average temperature of the year is 10.5°C, the rainfall of the year is 550 to 950 millimeters and the whole year sunshine is 2500 to 2800 hours.

Dalian Traffic

Dalian has a modern international airport, Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport, with direct flights to the most major cities in China, and to the selected cities in Japan, South Korea and Germany.
Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport is just 10 kilometers from downtown. It is a ten-minute ride by taxi and the cost is 10 Yuan.

Buses 516,532,610,701,710 all go downtown from here. The price is 1 RMB.
A bus travels daily between the Airlines Building, No.143 of Zhongshan Road, Xigang District and the airport. Its schedule is timed with the arrival of flights.

Dalian railway is connected with the railway network of Northeast China and North China. Everyday more than 50 trains leave Dalian for Beijing, Shenyang, Harbin and many other cities. The Liaosheng Evening Paper Express and the Golden Beach Express travels between Dalian and Shengyang. There are also air-conditioned express trains that travel between Dalian and Beijing, Changchun, and Harbin.
Dalian railway station, the terminal of Hada railway, is situated in Qingniwa Bridge of downtown Dalian. The station offers ticket delivery service.
Many buses serve Dalian railway station. Buses 7, 13, 31,101, 201, 203, 408, 414, 516, 522, 524, 531 serve the front of the station, and buses 527, 541 serve the north square of the station.

Dalian is a very busy port with ships traveling between Dalian and Yantai, Weihai, Penglai, Qinhuang islands, port of Tianjin, and Changhai County. High-speed tourist ships between Dalian and Yantai, Qinhuang islands and Changhai County have been added. There are also passenger ships that travel between Dalian port and Incheon, South Korea.
Dalian port station is situated in northern Wuwu Road in east Dalian.  From here, board bus 801 or 13 to go downtown.

The first motorway built in China----Liaoda motorway--- runs through the Liaodong Peninsula and connects the following five cities:  Shenyang, Liaoyang, Anshan, Yingkou, and Dalian. The Huanghai motorway (from Dalian to Dandong) runs through Zhuanghe. which is part of Dalian. Both the Heda highway (from National 201 highway to the city of Hehang) and the Heida highway (form National 202 highway to Heihe) start from Dalian (Lvshun).
Downtown Dalian has six long distance bus stations.

Local Transportation
There are three main roads in Dalian in the shape of an inverted T: at the left of the T is Zhongshan Road, at the right of the T is People's Road, and at the bottom of the T is Liberation Road. Together with Binhai Road in downtown, they service 90% of the tourist spots and squares.

Dalian has a comprehensive bus system. There are hundreds of bus lines in the city and o­ne can get anywhere by bus. Dalian also has three trolleybus lines.
Buses start operating at 4:00 or 4:30 in the morning and stop operating at 22:00 or 23:50 in the evening. Buses run at intervals of 3 to 8 minutes. During rush hour, they run every 1 to 2 minutes. Most buses sell tickets without conductors. A single ticket is 1 RMB. Passengers should have the exact fare.

The minibuses are either small or medium sized. A single ticket is 2 RMB.
High-speed trolleybuses to Xianglujiao and Gold Stone Beach have been added, helping to relief traffic congestion in Dalian.

The fare is 8 RMB for a 3 kilometers'ride, and 1.2 RMB per kilometer after that. Evening fares (from 22:00 to 5:00 the next morning) are 30% higher. Dalian is not very large, and most places can be reached for around 20 RMB.
