Honglou Introduction

Introduction
Hong Lou is located in Dongcheng District’s Wusi Dajie and was originally built in 1916 as a student dormitory for Peking University (Beida), but it became the institution’s literature academy when it was completed in August of 1918. A Western style structure, the five-story brick building was named for its distinctive red color and was considered at the forefront of architectural style for its time. Hong Lou is not only red on the outside but inside as well, with the floors and window frames painted in crimson hues. The library encompasses the entire first floor and still has chairs marked with characters showing which department they belonged to. Staff offices were located on the second floor, with the third and fourth floors consisting of classrooms. The basement housed a large printing press that produced progressive magazines like Renaissance (Xin Chao) and New Youth (Xin Qingnian), both seminal publications for the New Culture Movement. Though only the first floor is open to the public today, you can still see a large classroom, the reading room where Mao used to work, and the office of the library administrator Li Dazhao, who introduced the young Mao and others to books on Marxism.

Honglou Features

Highlights
After Cai Yuanpei became president of Beida in 1917, he hired the progressive New Culture Movement thinker Chen Duxiu to head the Liberal Arts department. Other progressive thinkers like Li Dazhao, Hu Shi and Lu Xun were also hired as teachers, and a young Hunanese progressive named Mao Zedong was hired to work in the building as an assistant librarian. Using Hong Lou as a base, these men helped lay the groundwork for the New Culture and May Fourth movements through meetings, rallies and publications, and went on to form the first Communist group in northern China (Chen Duxiu had earlier started a Communist group down in Shanghai). Today, Hong Lou is the site of the Beijing Memorial Hall of the New Cultural Movement, and is part of the National Museum of China.
