Lishan Mountain Introduction

Located at the south of Lintong Town, Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province, Mount Lishan is on the north side of Mount Qinling and at its highest peak reaches 1,256 meters above sea level. The shape of the mountain is said to resemble a horse, hence the name which translates as “Black Horse Mountain”.

The pines and cypresses on the mountain are exuberantly green all year round. Around the middle mountain stand the Lady of Lishan Temple and Laojun Temple interspersed with pavilions and towers, making it a really nice summer resort. Such famous scenic spots as the Beacon Tower, Huaqing Pool, Jiulong Hot Spring and the Forced Remonstration Pavilion (constructed to commemorate the Xi'an Incident) add luster to the mountain.

Legends and History about Lishan Mountain
The mountain first became a popular retreat during the Tang Dynasty when the Emperors enjoyed climbing up here and taking in the wonderful view, the Hot Springs and the various statues and pavilions en route. A pavilion rises up out of thick grass on the slope approaching the Huaqing Hot Springs. It was at this spot that on December 12th 1936 Chiang Kai-shek was taken prisoner by two of his officers and forced to join with the Communists in the struggle against the Japanese invaders.

On the east of the hill is also the spot where the Emperor Xuanzong and his concubine Lady Yang made solemn promises to love one another for ever! The Huaqing Hot Springs are to be found 26km east of Xi'an at the foot of Mount Lishan in a large park containing a number of public baths and some modern palaces built in the Tang style. The hot springs, rich in minerals and with a temperature of 43°C, were highly regarded more than 3000 years ago. The Tang Emperor Xuanzong often spent the winter here in the company of his favorite concubine Yang Guifei. Soon, the imperial baths were destroyed. In the 1980s, the foundations and bath basins were excavated, and the original buildings in the style of the Tang period were rebuilt on top.
