Zhenhuai Tower Features

Highlights
Under Zhenhuai Tower was a key road for vehicles and horses that was used during the Ming and Qing Dynasty. As the Huai River frequently flooded, causing high loss of life and extensive destruction, the tower was given the name Zhenhuai, meaning “to keep down the water of Huai River”. The city’s inhabitants had hoped that they could curb the threat of the river by constantly standing guard. Ascending the stairs, there are thick red columns and carved heads of imposing dragons, which have big, round eyes and are angrily opening their mouths. The corridor is decorated with images of lions, tigers, Chinese unicorns, phoenix and flowers, as well as birds, insects and fishes, all of which all have auspicious connotations in Chinese culture. Doors and windows are made of wood and are intricately carved. Upstairs, visitors can visit a small history museum.
