It is regarded as one of the most prestigious and selective universities in China.Mr. Tan handed over Xiamen University to the government in 1937 due to lack of funds, and the institution subsequently became a national university. In 1938, at the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War, the university temporary relocated to Changting in Min Xi county, western Fujian. At the end of World War II in 1946, Xiamen University moved back to Xiamen and resumed normal operations. In 1952, Xiamen University became a comprehensive university, and has been designated as a national key university since 1962.
Xiamen University, a picturesque campus nestled between the sea and the "Five Old Men" mountains, is largely considered to be the most beautiful campus in China, the only other coming close being Wuhan University. Its fun strolling the campus on a sunny morning or afternoon .First head for the lake in the center of campus. If you walk the paths around the lake you will discover arched bridges and an island with bronze life-size statues. From the lake you can see the modern architecture of the new administration and classroom buildings as well as the original ancient style dormitory buildings on the opposite sides. Behind those buildings you can hike up the mountains in the back. There are many trails that lead over the mountain to the botantical gardens on the other side.
If you walk to the East of the lake you will find paths leading to the ancient style original campus classrooms that surround a football stadium which has a view of the ocean. The ocean and the beautiful beach road are bordering the campus. There are beautiful walkways along the beach and benches for a relaxing time contemplating the waves--or stroll the 5.9km. Xiamen Boardwalk, which has to be one of the nicest on the planet.
On the North side of campus are the bustling campus stores and many small restaurants. Our favorite restaurant along here is the Lin Duck House. If you want to take a hike over the mountain, the easy path is found by heading straight up the road from the Nan Pu Tuo Temple University Entrance .  Go past the round cafeteria and keep to your left on the road that ascends the mountain. You can take a nice stone path the whole way over the mountain and then down into the botanical gardens. You first pass through the military park and museum, and veer to the right and down.
And there are Luxun memorial Hall and Humanities Museum in Xiamen University. In 1952, the National Education Ministry authorized XMU to establish an anthropology museum, which was opened to the public in 1953 for the purposes of anthropological research, teaching and social education. The center has performed research on the New Stone Age era of S.E.
