1st National Congress Site of the CPC Introduction

The Memorial Hall of the First National Congress Site of the CPC is located at the city of Shanghai. The buildings of the memorial hall are two rows of nine Shikumen(a kind of typical residential two-storeyed building popular in the late early 20th century in Shanghai) buildings with the total space of 900 square meters.
In October 1951, the Administrative Committee of Shanghai Revolutionary Historical Memorial Hall confirmed the site and had it open restrictedly after a little renovation. In 1958, the original features of the Congress Site were restored and several auxiliary exhibition rooms were arranged in the houses adjoining the Congress Site. In March 1961, the State Council of the People's Republic of China declared it a major historical site under the State protection. It was not until in 1967 that it was officially named the Memorial Hall of 1stNational Congress Site of the CPC.

1st National Congress Site of the CPC Features

The meeting room of the 1st National Congress used to be the parlor of the residence of Li Hanjun (original name as Li Shushi), o­ne of the Shanghai representatives participating in the 1stNational Congress, and his elder brother Li Shucheng. o­n July 23, 1921, the congress of founding the CPC was held here. The Congress Site was o­nly an 18 square meters room with tea sets, vases and ashtrays laid o­n the big dining table in the center. The long table is surrounded with round stools and square chairs for the representatives to sit, a small two-drawer desk is laid by the wooden partition at the north end and the old-style lampshades and tungsten lamps are used for room illumination. All these arrangements are drawn and reproduced in accordance with the memory of Ms. Xue Wenshu, Li Shucheng's wife, the owner of the building, and examined and approved o­n the spot by Dong Biwu, Li Da and Bao Huiseng, the representatives of the 1stNational Congress. The show rooms behind the Congress Site consist of three parts, namely the Historical Background of Founding of the CPC, the Birth and Activities of Communist Groups in Various Places, and the Birth of the CPC. The photos, historical data and objects, totaling around 200 items, in the 90 square metersshow rooms reappear the history at the time of establishment of the CPC. The existing display also shows the photos and biographical notes of all the thirteen representatives and the two Comintern representatives present at the 1stNational Congress.
The memorial hall has collected 39,000 items of historical relics, of which 348 belong to Class o­ne relics. Among those precious historical relics are the English typewriters o­nce used by Sun Yat-sen and Li Dazhao,the first full text ofthe Manifesto of the Communist Partytranslated into Chinese by Chen Wangdao and published in 1920 in Shanghai, and Liu Shaoqi's name card  when he was working at the Shanghai General Labor Union during the May 30thMovement. The main exhibitions sponsored by the memorial hall include the Exhibition of 100thAnniversary of the Army of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Entering into Shanghai, the Exhibition of May 30thMovement, the Exhibition in Memory of 30thAnniversary of 3rdArmed Uprising of the Workers in Shanghai, the Exhibition of Comrade Mao Zedong's Early Revolutionary Activities in Shanghai and the Exhibition of Comrade Dong Biwu in Shanghai.
The memorial hall has compiled and published A Short Guide to the '1stNational Congress' Site of the CPCandthe Research o­n Activities of the CPC Establishment in Shanghai Area,Communist Groups in Shanghaiandthe Chronology of the Local CPC History of Shanghai during New Democratic Revolutionary Period (1919-1927), and writtenthe Biography of Yun Daiyingandthe Biography of Li Hanjunjointly with other units.
